Start of the ‘Disability Leadership’ course on 31 October 2025

Disability Leadership launched: Diversity leads the way – and a historic day was celebrated (red/dw)

On 31 October 2025, something unprecedented in Europe began at Bertha von Suttner Private University in St. Pölten: 25 leaders with disabilities from all over Austria came together as a group for the first time to begin their studies. Each of them brought with them experiences that had long been lacking in leadership positions. Together, they formed the first cohort of the Disability Leadership university course – developed in collaboration with the Right Now association.

As soon as they arrived, it was clear that this was a special day: greetings with curious glances, laughter, cautious hugs. Many were seeing each other for the first time outside of a screen. Between curious small talk and the first ‘How nice to see you!’ there was a subtle mixture of pride and anticipation.

A reception that made history

The auditorium quickly filled up – not only with people, but also with meaning.
Barbara Sima-Ruml took over as moderator and warmly welcomed the students. Daniela Rammel, chairwoman of Right Now, and Rupert Roniger, deputy chairman, spoke with great personal relevance about the journey that had led to this day. The city of St. Pölten also showed its appreciation: Representing the mayor, Councillor Birgit Becker officially welcomed the students. Heidemarie Egger from FmB – Women with Disabilities also found personal and motivating words for the new students from all over Austria.

They were words of arrival – in the course, in their role as leaders, in a future that is being thought of on a larger scale.

Support from the highest level

Particularly moving: the message of greeting from Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. His words made it clear that this is not just about education, but about democratic participation:

‘People with disabilities actively shape this society. Their voices belong in the rooms where the future is decided. And this course is a strong signal of that.’

The students were visibly recognised for what they are: role models.

What drives us

It was clear from the very first day that this group has something to say. And it has plans.

‘I want to shape leadership in such a way that diversity is taken into account as a matter of course – and contribute my perspective where it is needed.’
– Rebekka Gottwald

‘The perspectives of disabled people must be taken into account as a matter of course in all decisions – wherever they are made.’
– Marlene Krubner

‘Inclusion is not an additional project – it is at the heart of every organisation and affects society as a whole.’
– Josef Matthias Hasenbichler

A study programme that changes attitudes

Under the academic direction of Professor Oliver Koenig, inclusive leadership is taught in a practical and experiential way. The course combines science, empowerment and leadership training into a format that moves people and systems alike.

This launch was made possible by funding from the Licht ins Dunkel association and a strong community of supporters in politics, business and culture.

A milestone – with a long shadow into the future

31 October was not just a start date.
It was a historic moment.
For the students. For Austria. For the future of leadership.

Disability Leadership shows:
Diversity leads.
Already now.
And from here on.
